Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My target audience for my magazine would be mainly females from the ages between 15-20. Males can read it too but I think because of the house styles and colours they will be less attracted to the magazine. Most people who are in my target audience will be in full time education, school/ college or university. This means they will have very little income even though some maybe earning money through part time jobs or apprenticeships depending on what level they are doing. Due to the fact that most of my audience will be in education and money will be low my magazine is kept at £2.99. This then makes sure it is targeted at the correct people so they are able to purchase my product. Most people in the target audience will be living at home with their guardians still or in student accommodation. Some possibly may even be living on their own in smaller accommodations such as a flat. If at university, the student will be spending a lot of time studying as someone in university may want to do professional high paid jobs.

Teenagers and young adults value their friendships with others and enjoy spending time with friend going out to places. People in my target audience enjoy clubbing, going to the cinema and much more! The money they do receive is usually spent on things like food, make up and clothing which is good because sections of the magazine may include things like that. Teenagers and young adults do spend money on music that they really enjoy however tend to mainly stream their music. They also spend money on electronic devices too. This is because people stay in contact with each other constantly with social media they can access through the device. If they have many electronic gadgets, it can help make someone seem more up to date and more current than others. Often people look at stars to view what they wear, how they wear it and what their style is like. So clothes featured in the magazine will be looked at via the audience. This is because they think if people approve their clothes and they take ideas from them that then people will like their style too. People of this age group tend to be very paranoid about what they look like and take ages to get ready as they want to feel accepted by others. The shops they are most likely going to shop from would be Topshop, New Look and places like River Island. Many teenagers like to view movies at the cinema so will spend money on that and if they really like a film will go out and buy films on DVD.

Smartphones are very popular with in TUNE's target audience. Popular phones are phones like the latest iPhones and the latest Samsung Galaxies. Apps are created for practically everything and the target audience of females 15-20 often do not purchase music but stream music through apps. They stream music through apps like Spotify, soundcloud, deezer and many more. Streaming music requires internet so when they are not connectioned to a wireless connnection many 15-20 year olds use their mobile data. An example of downloading music would be on Apple devices such as iPhones. There is an app already downloaded onto any apple device called iTunes. iTunes allows a person to purchase a single or albums. This will then be on the music app. Once purchased and with the songs bought, the device allows the individual to listen to music on the go- with or without internet!

JICNAR SCALE:
Class A: Upper middle class- people who are high managerial, administrative or professional. So these would be your professional workers (Lawyers, Owners of businesses, Doctors).
Class B: Middle class- people who are intermediate managerial, administrative or professional. So these would be managerial. People like bank managers and teachers.
Class C1: Lower middle class- people who are supervisory or clerical, managerial, administrative or professional. So non-manual workers so that would be people who worked in places such as offices.
Class C2: Skilled working class- people who are skilled manual workers. So manual people would be people who worked as an assembly line worker.
Class D: Working class- people who are semi and unskilled manual workers. So these are people who are partially skilled so a factory worker building something.
Class E: Those at lowest- people who are state pensioners or windows or casual lowest grade workers. This could also be people who are in education as well.
This is the JICNAR scale which groups certain types of people up. My primary audience are 15-20 years old. This would mean that they are classed as group E straight away. This is because if most of them are naturally are in the educational system still, they will not be receiving much income. Even with a part time or paper round.

To gain an insight on what my audience thinks about my magazine products I asked two students from the ages of 15-20 what they thought of my products. One is male, one is female, this helps me gain an idea of the perspectives of the two different genders. This links in to my target audience and the products by saying it is mainly for females, yet males can read it to. I asked the following questions:
  • What do you like about the magazine?
  • What would you change about the product?
  • How could the magazine appeal to both genders more?
  • Is the magazine simple to read, is it intimidating, does it allow you to approach it?
  • Would you willingly spend £2.99 on this product?
